If you are able to make a connection and the system appears that you have been able to make changes, but you are unable to see the changes when viewing your website, try the following:
1) Ensure that you are not viewing a cached web page by clearing your cache and cookies from the browser. If you need to know how to clear the cache from your particular browser, check the browser tutorials.
2) Many hosting providers have what is known as a "Public Directory". This is often called public or publichtml, httpdocs, etc. If your hosting provider system has a public directory, then if you want your files to be viewable by the public on the internet, be sure to upload files within this public directory.
3) If you are using your domain name as the ftp host, then it is probable that you uploading to the same place your domain name is being hosted. Some hosting providers though, use a different upload system. If you are uploading to a user account or a server address, then make sure to verify that you are hosting at the same place you are uploading to. Sometimes hosting providers will move an account to a different server. Sometimes a person may be uploading to a hosting provider that they are no longer hosting with, (this actually happens quite often).
4) If your hosting system allows for multiple websites or domains, then it is important to make sure you are uploading to the correct sub directory. If your domain is set up to point at a specific sub directory and you are uploading someplace else, you will never see the new files.
